MISSION: Sheltie Rescue of St. Louis is an all-volunteer, non-profit organization dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation, and placement of adult purebred Shelties with responsible owners.
Goals & Objectives:
RESCUE: Prevent the euthanasia of all healthy Shelties with sound temperaments.
- Accept ALL Shelties from any animal welfare organization within 120 miles of St. Louis.
- Partner with animal welfare organizations to adopt Shelties out directly by referring potential owners.
- Partner with Sheltie Rescue organizations across the United States to ensure that all Shelties needing homes are helped.
- Provide training instruction for the owners of dogs with correctable behavior problems. Encourage owners to spay/neuter their pet quality dogs.
- Ensure our Shelties receive superior health care prior to placement.
- Evaluate the temperament of our Shelties to ensure that only dogs with stable temperaments are placed in new homes.
- Ensure our Shelties are spayed and neutered to reduce the number of unwanted dogs destroyed every year.
- Educate and inform the public regarding commercial breeding facilities (puppy mills) and why they should never purchase a puppy from a pet store.
REHABILITATION: Provide basic level of training and correct any behavioral problems for Shelties in our program.
- Our Shelties receive training specific to their individual needs. Dogs are housetrained, socialized, crate-trained, leash-trained and taught basic manners.
PLACEMENT: Provide the best quality, most responsible home for each individual Sheltie.
- Ensure our Shelties are in homes that will provide a safe environment with sufficient amounts of attention and interaction. Our Shelties are members of the family, not just pets.
- Our Shelties will stay in foster care until we find a home that is a good match.
- Each prospective applicant will be interviewed by at least two volunteers.
- A home visit will be conducted before the adoption of our Shelties.
- Education on the proper grooming, feeding and training needs of Shelties will be provided to new owners.
- Detailed instruction on how to assist the dog with adjusting to the new home will be provided to the new owners.
- For dogs being relinquished by owners, we will act as a referral service in assisting these dogs find new homes. If we have room in our program, we may accept owner relinquishments, but that is not our primary goal.
